Counting down to the beginning of the season I’m going to attempt to post one player per day for the last 99 matching their jersey number to the days left until kick off. The players will be random. Use this thread to celebrate and Talk About Some DudesTM

Sean Taylor grew up in the poor suburbs of Miami and attended both Miami Killian High School and later Gulliver Preparatory School where he was a three sport star in track, basketball and football. He played both offense and defense in high school and lead Gulliver to Florida’s 2A State championship. He rushed for 1400 yards and a state record 44 touchdowns. He also tallied more than 100 tackles playing linebacker and defensive back. He also won the 100-meter dash state title and was one of the top 400-meter sprinters as well.

He was the #1 prospect in Miami-Dade County, the #1 athlete in Florida and the #1 skill athlete and All-American by Super Prep and chose to stay at home and play for the Hurricanes.

He was one of just four freshman to play for the unstoppable 2001 Hurricanes team that won the National Championship.

His sophomore year of 2002 saw Miami again go back to the national title game in large part due to an incredible defense. Taylor lead all defensive backs and was third on the team with 83 tackles. He also broke up 15 passes, intercepted another 4, forced a fumble, blocked a kick and returned a punt for a touchdown. He lead the secondary in tackles, interceptions and passes broken up. He was named second-team All-Big East.

2003 was Taylor’s final and finest in Coral Gables. He was first-team All-Big East, the Big East Defensive Player of the Year, a unanimous All-American, won the Jack Tatum award and was a finalist for the Jim Thorpe award. He tied the Miami single season record with 10 interceptions and set the Miami record with 3 for touchdowns. He led the team in tackles.

Taylor was drafted 5th overall by Washington in the NFL draft. He was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team, was a 2x Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro in 2007.

Tragically his career and life were cut short during a home invasion in 2007.

Posthumously Sean Taylor was honored in the Ring of Fame for Washington. Ryan Clark, Su’a Cravens and Landon Collins all paid tribute to Taylor with their jersey numbers at various times in their careers.

In 2020 one of the roads leading to FedExField was named in Taylor’s honor, in 2021 his #21 became the third number to be retired by Washington.

returning a pick on the road, awesome home picture
