After a huge 2022 (Ozark, Stranger Things, Bridgerton, Wednesday, Dahmer, etc.) the first half of 2023 was still good for them with a surprisingly big to me Ginny and Georgia performance, Night Agent smashed, Suits was huge previous IP and New Amsterdam was sneaky big one, Queen Charlotte had solid performance, and I think One Piece will be a long term hit.

But what have they had last September (One Piece debuted in August 23)… some mini series like Baby Reindeer, Fool Me Once, Griselda. My Life with the Walter Boys, The Gentleman, Avatar the Last Airbender, 3 Body Problem are some of their biggest new shows, the latter getting a best drama nomination. Your Honor and Young Sheldon were previous IP hits.

Is this that good? I think “something has changed” … you can throw numbers at me if you want. Even for stuff like My Life with the Walter Boys, doesn’t it feel like less people know what it is than some of the shows that have ended like Sex Education and Never Have I Ever? You trade Umbrella Academy for the Gentleman and sure the numbers are the same, but I feel like UA was an additive representative for Netflix brand if that makes sense, Ritchie could’ve made his show on other services.

The tide has turned to me. They can still live off their old hits for a while but they need new signature shows or else it’s going to catch up to them. By signature I don’t even mean they hav eto be new versions of Stranger Things or Wednesday though yes they need to hit one of those eventually too, but even shows like Emily in Paris… it’s a “signature” show. It may be harder to establish shows as signature going forward.
