Original Title: If anything “We Own This City” is even more pessimistic/nihilistic than “The Wire”. Have media depictions improved conditions in 2024 America (sunlight disinfectant) or made them worse (echo chamber of confirmation bias)?
It got me thinking about the real world implications of art. To what extent early 1900’s mob movies and 1990’s gangsta rap influenced the mannerisms of criminals… To what extent dirty cops might find solace in these TV depictions “that’s just how we are and how it’s done”.
Depressing topic, but on the bright side, Jon Bernthal’s performance blew my hair back. As the Punisher, he’s impressive, but Jenkins was something I never knew he was capable of. Hats off to the guy as at times I lapsed into seeing him as if I was watching a found footage documentary.
