Like on Lost when it’s season 5 and the time travel element is introduced and Sawyer, Jin, John, Daniel Faraday, Juliet and others all have their own stories and remain on the island but Jack, Kate, Sun, Hurley and co. are are on the mainland for much of the season before they reunite.
A sitcom example of this I can think of is when Jim from The Office is in Stamford in season 3 until The Merger and we see that iconic conversation with Pam on the phone.
Another example is in season 9 of HIMYM when Marshall is on the road trip leading to Barney and Robin’s wedding, completely separate from the other character.
What are the best examples of this where the main characters who are usually inseparable don’t interact for long periods?
