I could make an argument that the major step-chamge in the acceptance of genre movies was the release of Star Wars.

Yea the article is clearly suffering recency bias. After Star Wars, Sci-fi went through the same thing as fantasy/comics now (AFAIU).
Without knowing though, I’d guess it’s always been like this in Hollywood. Westerns, Pirate/swashbuckling films, blockbusters … I’d imagine they all broke through at some point as attractive genres.
