As my recent memory serves, it’s been a while since we haven’t rewarded the national champion with some preseason poll fluffery. LSU started fourth in preseason and finished 5-5 in the COVID-shortened season to defend their title - and I think the media has caught on that good teams don’t always generate consistent success.
I think Michigan’s lower ranking is fair - I think Michigan’s schedule, lost talent, and outstanding QB questions will keep them out of the top 10 by year’s end. Granted recent national champions have returned their coach and usually have more talent on deck.
Additionally, as runner-up, Washington isn’t ranked (but they are receiving votes). Even after getting blown the fuck out and losing all that talent, TCU returned ranked 17th (before losing to Colorado lmao).
