Old, rather low budget, and at time silly makeup effects. If you can stomach that, you’ll find that this is otherwise one of the most brilliant, heartfelt, and captivating series ever in the history of television.
In my opinion, “I, Claudius” is the greatest television show ever made. It comes off differently than a regular tv show, and more like a stage production where you are invited on the set with the actors. Boasting some of the best British acting of its era – both from theater and film – the show has complex and engaging characters driven by breathtaking dialogue. The story is brilliant both by writing and by its own existence – the turbulence, violence, and decadence of Rome’s first five emperors reign – the Julio-Claudian dynasty of the Roman Empire.
I, Claudius was very ahead of its time when it comes to craft and ambition. It marks the beginnings of TV taking itself seriously, and modern television owes so much to the series. The prototype is the pinnacle. I, Claudius is a monument of excellence that is a must-see for all.
