Counting down to the beginning of the season I’m going to attempt to post one player per day for the last 99 matching their jersey number to the days left until kick off. The players will be random. Use this thread to celebrate and Talk About Some DudesTM
Marshall Faulk was born and raised in New Orleans, LA. He was a standout running back, DB and sprinter at Carver High School. He had 1800 rushing yards and 31 TDs in his final two years to pair with 11 INTs with 6 for TDs.
He was heavily recruited but preferred running the ball to defense. He chose SDSU as they offered him the opportunity to be a featured back in their offense.
In just his second collegiate game he amassed 37 carries, 386 yards rushing and 7 TDs. His yardage and TD totals were freshman records (yardage a record regardless of class). He finished the year with 1630 scrimmage yards, 23 TDs and 240 points scored. He became just the third ever player to be named to the AP All American team as a freshman. He finished 9th in the Heisman race.
His sophomore year saw Faulk put up 1630 rushing yards and 15 TDs. This again netted him All-American honors along with WAC Offensive Player of the year honors and finished runner up in the Heisman race to Gino Toretta.
His junior year is when he began to display his legendary all-purpose abilities. He tallied 1530 rushing yards and 21 TDs and paired that with 640 receiving yards and 3 more TDs. These numbers put Faulk 3rd in the nation in all-purpose yardage that year, and 2nd in scoring. He was again an All-American and finished 4th in the Heisman Race.
Faulk left San Diego State University after his junior year with many of the school’s offensive records, including 5,562 all-purpose yards and 62 career touchdowns, which is the 8th most in NCAA history.
He went onto a long and storied NFL career with the Colts and Rams including:
PFWA All Rookie team, 3x first-team all-pro, 3x second-team all pro, NFL MVP, 3x offensive player of the year, 7 pro bowls, 2x scoring leader and super bowl champion.
Faulk is in the Colts and Rams Rings of honor, his #28 is retired by both the Aztecs and Rams.
He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
