I never understood why conferences were needed outside of TV packages. You don’t need conferences to keep rivalries together. When Nebraska left the Big 12 for the Big 10 that ended a historic rivalry with Oklahoma. USC and UCLA jumping ship to Big 10 ends their rivalries with Cal and Stanford. UCF jumping to Big 12 ends the War on I-4 with USF still in The American. The list goes on and on. If we didn’t have conferences I think networks would be better off too because let’s be honest CBS doesn’t want the Big 10 they just want Michigan, OSU and USC. So they would be free to have Notre Dame/NBC type deals with those specific schools instead of having to pay Rutgers and Perdue to have OSU/Michigan/USC.

So is it really just the schools that want conferences?
