Best of the Best: Simulating a Season with the Greatest Modern Era Teams
In an effort to figure out how each program’s best modern team stacks up against each other, I’ll be simming the 2024 season schedule. But, instead of using next year’s rosters, I’m using each program’s best team since 1996. By the end of this, we’ll have determined the best team, QB, RB, WR, offensive line, you name it–of the modern era. And we’ll have a full 134-team ranking of where every program’s best team stacks up with each other. I sim one time for every matchup, so some shocking one-off results may occur. That’s part of the fun, anybody’s got a shot to win it all. If you view these posts using the old Reddit layout, you’ll be able to see team and conference flairs.
If you missed the previous weeks/results, the Main hub thread link is here.

Rivalry week, WE ARE HERE. How about these results? 2020 Alabama avenged the 10-year old loss to 2010 Auburn, putting on a show of pure domination. Najee Harris had 239 yards and 4 touchdowns in the 68-21 win, the Tide are going to be an absolute problem in the Playoff. #2 LSU clinches a spot in the SEC Championship Game with a 45-24 win over Oklahoma–Joe Burrow had a 4 TD 0 INT performance and he can taste the Heisman. #7 LOUISVILLE is upset by Kentucky! Unreal! They seemed like a lock for the Playoff heading into this weekend. 2005 Texas might’ve had a difficult season, but they have the last laugh with a 55-20 drubbing of Texas A&M featuring 7 touchdowns from Vince Young. #9 Missouri beat Arkansas and they’ve done all they can to solidify their Playoff spot–the only thing left to do is wait. Georgia won Clean, Old Fashioned Hate, Ole Miss won the Egg Bowl, and #16 Tennessee blew out Vanderbilt hoping for a Playoff push.

2019 Ohio State likely locks in their Playoff spot with a win over 2023 Michigan. Michigan gave it their all, tying the game with 4:45 left, but Justin Fields drove his team down the field to take a 20-17 lead with 1:06 left. Ohio State hit one last FG with 0 seconds left. #6 Washington pulls off a gutsy win in Eugene, clinching a spot in the Big Ten title game, 4 TD 0 INT from Michael Penix. They’ll play #5 USC who just beat Notre Dame. #17 Michigan State’s Playoff hopes come to an end with an upset loss to Rutgers, who complete a solid 7-5 year. Nebraska proves they have better corn than Iowa and keep them out of a bowl, Scott Frost finally had a good performance, throwing for 126 yards on just 4 completions. Fresno State gets a big road win to end their regular season over UCLA, who finishes just 6-6 despite beating #2 LSU. Penn State finishes 5-7, Wisconsin beats Minnesota in their rivalry game, Indiana wins the Old Oaken Bucket against Purdue to clinch a bowl, and Northwestern ends a miserable season with their first Big Ten win, an upset over rival Illinois.

We’ve got drama in the American! Memphis and Tulane duked it out as a pair of 1st place teams, Memphis winning on a 44 yard FG with no time left. That set FAU up with a chance to clinch the other title game spot, but Tulsa beat them in overtime. Tulsa tied the game 31-31 with a 10 yard TD on the last play of the game, and FAU fell short on 4th down in 2nd overtime to fumble their chance at an American title. The title game will be Memphis vs one of Tulane or FAU, whoever gets the tiebreaker.

Hell of a weekend for the Mountain West. Boise State took a 21-3 lead early over Oregon State and never looked back, picking up one of their most impressive wins of the season. They’re ready for the MWC title game. San Jose State maybe had the best performance of any team in the country this weekend, blowing out 2010 Stanford 42-16, Nick Starkel outdueling Andrew Luck with a 5 TD performance. Heck, even Fresno State beat UCLA (in the Big Ten section above). Hawaii’s win over New Mexico makes it a 4-way tie for 2nd place between San Jose State, Fresno State, Hawaii, and Wyoming. The team selected to play Boise in the title game will be revealed tomorrow.
- 2000 Oregon State (8-4, 1-0) [19-45] #11 2009 Boise State (11-1, 6-1)
- 2010 Stanford (7-5, 5-3) [16-42] **…
