For those not familiar with the character, they’re a series of novels written by Walter Mosley about a black private investigator from LA. The most notable adaptation was ‘Devil in a Blue Dress’ starring Denzel Washington (and a great scene stealing performance from Don Cheadle). There are fourteen other novels and while there’s always rumors of someone planning to adapt it, it never really gets off the ground.
It fits into the niche category of dad shows like Justified, Bosch, Jack Ryan, Jack Reacher, etc. but the added quality of taking place in the 1940s. Skip Devil in a Blue Dress and pick his five best ones and you got a hit show. Can’t be worse than the stuff they’re greenlighting now.
