Best of the Best: Simulating a Season with the Greatest Modern Era Teams

In an effort to figure out how each program’s best modern team stacks up against each other, I’ll be simming the 2024 season schedule. But, instead of using next year’s rosters, I’m using each program’s best team since 1996. By the end of this, we’ll have determined the best team, QB, RB, WR, offensive line, you name it–of the modern era. And we’ll have a full 134-team ranking of where every program’s best team stacks up with each other. I sim one time for every matchup, so some shocking one-off results may occur. That’s part of the fun, anybody’s got a shot to win it all. If you view these posts using the old Reddit layout, you’ll be able to see team and conference flairs.

If you missed the previous weeks/results, the Main hub thread link is here.

SEC :

Alabama makes EASY work of former national champion 2000 Oklahoma. On the road. The Tide held a 35-24 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter before a 24-0 4th quarter. Mac Jones threw 5 TD as he’s encroaching on Joe Burrow’s Heisman territory. #24 Oklahoma is officially eliminated from Playoff contention, as is #23 Auburn after a loss to Texas A&M. #2 LSU is on the brink of clinching a spot in the SEC Championship Game for a rematch with #1 Alabama–If Missouri, Florida, and LSU all finish 6-2 in the SEC, I will use the overall ranking as a tiebreaker as Missouri’s played neither team. Speaking of which, #11 Missouri is nearly in the Playoff with another win. Just one more and they probably make it. 2012 Louisiana Tech picked up a big upset win over Arkansas, remember that LT team nearly beat Johnny Manziel in 2012. Texas clinches a bowl, #18 Tennessee stays alive in the Playoff race with a win, Georgia clinches a bowl, and 2008 Florida avenges their loss to 2008 Ole Miss by beating the snot out of the 2023 version.

  • #1 2020 Alabama (11-0, 7-0) [59-24] #24 2000 Oklahoma (7-4, 3-4)
  • 2012 Texas A&M (7-4, 3-4) [24-21] #23 2010 Auburn (7-4, 4-3)
  • 2012 Vanderbilt (5-6, 2-6) [13-48] #2 2019 LSU (9-2, 6-1)
  • #11 2007 Missouri (9-2, 5-2) [38-28] 2014 Mississippi State (3-8, 1-6)
  • 2012 Louisiana Tech (8-3, 5-2) [31-17] 2011 Arkansas (6-5, 4-3)
  • 2018 Kentucky (5-6, 2-6) [17-31] 2005 Texas (6-5, 4-3)
  • 2004 UTEP (7-4, 5-2) [19-24] #18 1998 Tennessee (8-3, 4-3)
  • Wofford [14-43] 2013 South Carolina (4-7, 1-7)
  • 2017 Massachusetts (4-7, 0-0) [16-23] 2022 Georgia (6-5, 4-4)
  • 2023 Ole Miss (5-6, 3-4) [10-41] #6 2008 Florida (9-2, 6-2)
Big Ten :

2004 USC has clinched a spot in the Big Ten title game! After losing to current #2 LSU to start the season, USC’s been on a tear, winning 9 of 10 games and are currently sitting at #5. They’ll play either Washington or Ohio State, depending on how things shake out next week. The Buckeyes could sneak in with a win over Michigan next week and a Washington loss @ Oregon. #19 Michigan State still has an outside shot at the Playoff, and a less than 1% chance at making the Big Ten title game, but that’s next to impossible, as they’d need to win, Ohio State and Washington State to lose, and to pass Washington in the rankings. Wisconsin eliminates Nebraska from bowl eligibility, and Michigan and Maryland clinch bowl games.

  • #5 2004 USC (9-2, 8-1) [32-21] 1998 UCLA (6-5, 5-4)
  • 2020 Indiana (5-6, 2-6) [13-49] #8 2019 Ohio State (9-2, 6-2)
  • 1998 Purdue (6-5, 4-4) [6-26] #19 2013 Michigan State (8-3, 6-2)
  • 2017 Wisconsin (7-4, 5-3) [42-22] 1997 Nebraska (4-7, 2-6)
  • 2005 Penn State (4-7, 3-5) [23-0] 2019 Minnesota (5-6, 2-6)
  • 2017 Northwestern (2-9, 0-8) [28-30] 2023 Michigan (6-5, 4-4)
  • 2001 Illinois (7-4, 5-3) [41-23] 2006 Rutgers (6-5, 3-5)
  • 2009 Iowa (5-6, 2-6) [20-27] 2002 Maryland (6-5, 4-4)
Big 12 :

OH MY. OH. MY. WE’VE. GOT. DRAMA. DOWN GO #7 BYU, #10 OKLAHOMA STATE, AND #13 ARIZONA. The Big 12 just absolutely cannibalized themselves, and potentially their Playoff chances. BYU is going to need to fight for an at-large spot, and the same goes for whoever doesn’t make the Big 12 title game out of Oklahoma State/Arizona. #12 Cincinnati survived Kansas State on the road thanks to their defense. #20 UCF is out. There was an offensive explosion between both teams in the 4th quarter, but West Virginia had the last laugh, Pat White running in an 11 yard TD with 24 seconds left. Utah is somehow still alive for a bowl, beating Iowa State.

  • #7 1996 BYU (8-3, 5-3) [16-37] 1996 Arizona State (4-7, 3-5)
  • 2008 Texas Tech (5-6, 3-5) [49-42] #10 2011 Oklahoma State (8-3, 6-2)
  • #13 1998 Arizona (8-3, 6-2) [17-41] 2010 TCU (6-5, 4-4)
  • #12 2009 Cincinnati (9-2, 6-2) [21-17] 1997 Kansas State (5-6, 2-6)
  • #20 2017 UCF (7-4, 5-3) [23-27] 2007 West Virginia (7-4, 4-4)
  • 1996 Colorado (6-5, 4-4) [23-38] 2007 Kansas (7-4, 4-4)
  • 2013 Baylor (6-5, 4-5) [28-31] (OT) 2015 Houston (3-8, 2-6)
  • 2020 Iowa State (5-6, 3-5) [21-43] 2008 Utah (5-6, 4-5)
ACC :

It appears 2021 Pittsburgh’s cinderella run has come to an end. #9 Louisville has all but clinched a spot in the Playoff with a 6-2 ACC record. Louisville, Clemson, and Florida State are all 6-2, Miami and Pittsburgh at 5-2. I’m gonna be honest, I have no idea how I’m going to do the tiebreaker, probably best record versus common opponents first, then by overall rank. #17 California is making a strong push–for both the Playoff and the Heisman. JJ Arrington earned a helmet sticker in a 55-13 win over rival #21 Stanford, combining with Marshawn Lynch to rush for 364 yards while Stanford’s top 2 RBs had just 53.

  • #16 2021 Pittsburgh (7-4, 5-2) [13-20] #9 2006 Louisville (9-2, 6-2)
  • #21 2010 Stanford (7-4, 5-3) [13-55] #17 2004 California (8-3, 4-3)
  • The Citadel [9-41] #3 2018 Clemson (9-2, 6-2)
  • Charleston Southern [14-63] #15 2013 Florida State (8-3, 6-2)
  • 2000 Virginia Tech (2-9, 2-5) [20-23] 2013 Duke (5-6, 2-5)
  • 2006 Wake Forest (6-5, 3-4) [9-42] 2001 Miami (FL) (8-3, 5-2)
  • 1997 North Carolina (6-5, 3-4) [20-23] 2006 Boston College (6-5, 3-4)
  • 2023 SMU (2-9, 1-6) [10-35] 1998 Virginia (6-5, 4-3)
  • 2002 NC State (6-5, 3-4) [23-17] 2014 Georgia Tech (2-9, 1-7)
  • 2007 UConn (6-5, 0-0) [24-27] 1996 Syracuse (7-4, 3-4)
Pac-12 :

THE OREGON STATE BEAVERS ARE YOUR PAC-12 “BEST OF THE BEST” CHAMPIONS! It’s been an up and down season, but really, more up than down. A win against Oregon and now a 2-Pac title, the Beavs will get themselves a nice bowl game and are in play for a double digit win season.

  • 2018 Washington State (4-7, 0-1) [20-26] 2000 Oregon State (8-3, 1-0)
Independents :

Notre Dame was surprisingly down 23-17 going into the 4th, but a 13-0 quarter helped them secure their 6th straight win.

  • 2018 Army (3-7, 3-4) [23-30] 2018 Notre Dame (7-4, 0-0)
American :

I messed up. FAU actually only has 1 conference loss. That means FAU is also in the mix for the American title, especially now that they beat Charlotte. UTSA and UAB clinched bowl eligibility, and North Texas has somehow won 2 straight after starting 1-8.

  • 2019 Charlotte (3-8, 2-5) [13-48] 2017 FAU (8-3, 6-1)
  • 2016 Temple (4-7, 3-4) [21-26] 2021 UTSA (6-5, 3-4)
  • 2008 Rice (6-5, 3-4) [19-21] 2018 UAB (6-5, 4-3)
  • 2008 Tulsa (7-4, 4-3) [27-13] 2007 South Florida (4-7, 2-5)
  • 1996 East Carolina (3-8, 2-5) [17-27] 2013 North Texas (3-8, 2-5)
Mountain West :

THE MOUNTAIN WEST RUNS THROUGH BOISE, IDAHO. Big time performance. Leading just 14-13 in Laramie at halftime, they made it 48-23 at one point in the 4th quarter. Kellen Moore was a masterful 30/41 passing for 442 yards and 4 TD. Boise will host the Mountain West title game, and they’ll play one of Wyoming/Fresno State/San Jose State after I figure out what their records versus common opponents are.

  • #14 2009 Boise State (10-1, 6-1) [48-30] 1996 Wyoming (7-4, 5-2)
  • 2000 UNLV (3-8, 2-4) [20-27] 2020 San Jose State (9-2, 5-2)
  • 1997 Colorado State (5-6, 2-4) [17-27] 2018 Fresno State (8-3, 5-2)
  • 2021 San Diego State (3-8, 1-5) [17-27] 2012 Utah State (4-7, 2-4)
  • 1998 Air Force (5-6, 2-4) [16-33] 2010 Nevada (5-7, 1-5)
Sun Belt :

#22 Marshall pulls out a gritty win to stay alive for the Playoff, and clinches a spot in the Sun Belt Championship with James Madison’s loss. Old Dominion gave it everything they …
