Original Title: Greg Schiano on new scholarship/roster limits: “People will say there’s a 105 roster limit, and you can give scholarships up to 105. If that goes through, I’m not sure those guys would have gotten a scholarship if it was limited to 105.”

Follow up to the thread posted yesterday by /u/crustang here. I thought the full quote touched on a broader point regarding the tradition of college football and opportunities for kids to gain a scholarship

From the press conference yesterday

Patrick Lanni/NJ.com:

Big picture, in the future it seems like roster construction is going to be a big deal with all the changes that are coming. Number 105 has been floated a little bit in terms of a roster cap. What does that mean for Rutgers and what’s your overall opinion on walk-ons and how they’re affected by what would be a 105 roster limit?

Greg Schiano:

It’s part of a much bigger decision, right, Patrick? But it is a great question because it’s going to change a lot. I’m really disappointed. I think it’s just awful because you look at walk-on football players. They’ve been such a critical part of the game of college football, and there are so many great traditions.

Look at our program. We have a wall outside our weight room honoring walk-ons who became captains, and several of them went on to play in the NFL. Gary Brackett, what a story! He was the captain of the Indianapolis Colts Super Bowl championship team and was a walk-on here. And you go down the list—Shan O’Hara, a tremendous player with multiple Super Bowl rings, was also a walk-on.

People will say there’s a 105 roster limit, and you can give scholarships up to 105. If that goes through, I’m not sure those guys would have gotten a scholarship if it was limited to 105. That’s where I get a kick out of everybody who thinks recruiting is a science. It’s more of an art form than a science. You’re dealing with young people who are developing. When I was 16, you were 16, and you were 16—we all had different levels of maturation. It changes. Some guys bloom late, and those guys will not have the opportunity to do it at this level now. They will go down a level.

Our roster is somewhere in the low 130s, so you do the math. It’s 28, 29 guys who will not have the opportunity to be at Rutgers and play Rutgers football. That, to me, is… I just am sad about it. But I understand the bigger picture. I understand what’s going on. I’m not naive, but I just wish it didn’t have to be that way. It’s a fallout of the big picture, right? It’s an unintended consequence.
