Best of the Best: Simulating a Season with the Greatest Modern Era Teams

In an effort to figure out how each program’s best modern team stacks up against each other, I’ll be simming the 2024 season schedule. But, instead of using next year’s rosters, I’m using each program’s best team since 1996. By the end of this, we’ll have determined the best team, QB, RB, WR, offensive line, you name it–of the modern era. And we’ll have a full 134-team ranking of where every program’s best team stacks up with each other. I sim one time for every matchup, so some shocking one-off results may occur. That’s part of the fun, anybody’s got a shot to win it all. If you view these posts using the old Reddit layout, you’ll be able to see team and conference flairs.

If you missed the previous weeks/results, the Main hub thread link is here.

SEC :

THE GAME LIVED UP TO THE HYPE. ALABAMA 51, LSU 50. LSU led 20-0 after the 1st quarter, but Alabama fought back to take a 24-23 lead early in the 3rd. Burrow threw a TD pass to go up 50-38 with 2:39 left, and it seemed like LSU had it sealed. Mac Jones fired a 74 yard TD bomb to DeVonta Smith to make it 50-45 with 1:53 remaining. LSU got the onside and drove the ball to the Bama 10 yard line, but Clyde Edwards-Helaire fumbled trying to get the ball into the endzone, bouncing out for a touchback. Bama drove down the field, at the LSU 19 with just 9 seconds left. Similar to Jalen Milroe against Auburn last year, Mac fired to the endzone, CAUGHT, JOHN METCHIE, TOUCHDOWN WITH 1 SECOND LEFT, ALABAMA WINS. They didn’t get the 2 point conversion, and the game ended 51-50 Alabama. Mac Jones had 530 pass yards and 7 TD 0 INT, making his case for the Heisman. Burrow had 445 yards 6 TD 0 INT himself, and DeVonta Smith had 11 catches for 232 yards and 3 TD. Alabama is clearly the team to beat in this sim. Texas led Florida going into the 4th, but the Gators had a 17-0 4th quarter to stay in the top 4. #20 Oklahoma took a 28-0 lead over #18 Missouri, but choked it away, missing 34 and 44 yard FGs in the 4th quarter to tie it.

    • #1 2020 Alabama (9-0, 6-0) [51-50] #2 2019 LSU (7-2, 4-1)

  • 2014 Mississippi State (3-7, 1-5) [19-41] #15 1998 Tennessee (7-2, 4-2)
Big Ten :

No real surprising results here. Washington impresses with a 28 point road victory over a Penn State team that had just beaten Ohio State. Oregon remains on path to a bowl game, improving to 5-5. Iowa falls to just 2-5 in the Big Ten while UCLA improves to 5-2. Michigan’s finally turning it around? 2 straight wins, if they beat Ohio State, would they be happy with their 7-5/6-6 record?

  • #7 2023 Washington (9-1, 6-1) [48-20] 2005 Penn State (3-6, 2-4)
  • 2002 Maryland (5-4, 3-3) [26-49] 2014 Oregon (5-5, 4-3)
  • 2009 Iowa (5-5, 2-5) [24-38] 1998 UCLA (6-3, 5-2)

  • 1998 Purdue (5-4, 3-3) [0-41] #16 2019 Ohio State (7-2, 4-2)
Big 12 :

God damn, Cincy takes care of business. It’s time to take them seriously as a natty contender after whooping #10 West Virginia 44-20. #8 BYU makes easy work of rival Utah, Brian Johnson throwing 0 touchdowns with 3 picks. It’s not Kordell Stewart this time, but Koy Detmer and Colorado beat Texas Tech on a Hail Mary! A 52 yard bomb from Detmer to Rae Carruth wins it 45-40 for the Buffs, and keeps their Big 12 title hopes alive. #9 Oklahoma State and #24 UCF avoid upsets on the road–Arizona State had the ball on UCF’s 5 yard line with 2 seconds left, but Jake Plummer’s pass to the end zone was overthrown.

  • #10 2007 West Virginia (6-3, 3-3) [20-44] #5 2009 Cincinnati (8-1, 5-1)
  • #8 1996 BYU (7-2, 4-2) [26-5] 2008 Utah (3-6, 2-5)
  • 1996 Colorado (6-3, 4-2) [45-40] 2008 Texas Tech (4-6, 2-5)
  • #9 2011 Oklahoma State (8-2, 6-1) [37-19] 2010 TCU (5-5, 3-4)

  • #24 2017 UCF (7-3, 5-2) [35-27] 1996 Arizona State (2-7, 1-5)
ACC :

We’ve got a #3 Clemson @ #12 Pitt matchup set for next week. Is this where Pitt solidifies their claim to being a Playoff team? Matt Ryan threw an 11 yard TD pass with 1:46 left to help Boston College upset 6-2 Syracuse, while Wake Forest got a dominant 31-6 win over #17 Cal. NC State RB TA Mclendon’s earned himself a helmet sticker with 4 TDs on the ground and 1 TD receiving. 2001 Miami’s trying to make a last ditch effort at a Playoff/ACC title push, they’re now 7-3 and Clinton Portis had another 200+ yard rushing game.

  • #3 2018 Clemson (7-2, 5-2) [35-9] 2000 Virginia Tech (2-8, 2-4)
  • 1998 Virginia (5-4, 3-3) [14-24] #12 2021 Pittsburgh (7-2, 5-0)
  • 1996 Syracuse (6-3, 3-3) [19-20] 2006 Boston College (4-5, 1-4)
  • #17 2004 California (6-3, 2-3) [6-31] 2006 Wake Forest (6-3, 3-2)
  • 2013 Duke (4-6, 1-5) [17-61] 2002 NC State (5-5, 2-4)
  • 2001 Miami (FL) (7-3, 4-2) [38-13] 2014 Georgia Tech (2-8, 1-6)
Pac-12 :

WHAT A COMEBACK BY #22 SAN JOSE STATE! HUGE ROAD WIN! Oregon State went up 26-9 with just 5:11 left, seemingly all but over. Nick Starkel threw a 19 yard TD pass to Tre Walker with 3:02 left to make it 26-16. OSU was stopped, and SJSU broke off a 73 yard punt return TD to make it 26-23 with 1:55 left. Oregon State was stopped once again, SJSU got the ball back with just 21 seconds left, and STARKEL THREW A 51 YARD TD PASS TO BAILEY GAITHER WITH 3 SECONDS LEFT! SAN JOSE STATE WINS! The Pac-12’s Playoff hopes are over, it was a hell of a run by Oregon State. They still have a win over 2014 Oregon, and can win the Pac-12 title. Washington State keeps their bowl hopes alive with a win over Utah State.

  • #22 2020 San Jose State (8-1, 4-1) [30-26] 2000 Oregon State (6-3, 0-0)
  • 2012 Utah State (3-6, 1-3) [17-24] 2018 Washington State (4-5, 0-0)
Independents :

How about the Irish??? 4 straight wins for Notre Dame, and it’s all coming crashing down for Florida State, who’ve lost 3 of their last 4. A team that seemed like a legit title contender, they’ll need to win out and get some help just to make the Playoff. Notre Dame RB Dexter Williams ran for 256 yards and 2 TD.

  • #11 2013 Florida State (7-3, 6-2) [24-30] 2018 Notre Dame (5-4, 0-0)
American :

Memphis has lost, this conference is officially up for grabs. Rice clinches bowl eligibility with the win, as does Tulane with a win over Temple. FAU somehow beat East Carolina 41-14 despite ECU RB Scott Harley rushing for 288 yards. 2007 UConn’s fallen off hard, now 6-4 with a loss to UAB.

  • 2008 Rice (6-4, 3-3) [31-28] 2019 Memphis (6-4, 5-1)
  • 2016 Temple (4-5, 3-2) [16-30] 2022 Tulane (6-4, 5-1)
  • 2018 Army (3-6, 3-4) [32-24] 2013 North Texas (1-8, 0-5)
  • 2015 Navy (4-5, 3-3) [21-3] 2007 South Florida (3-6, 1-4)
  • 2017 FAU (6-3, 4-2) [41-14] 1996 East Carolina (3-6, 2-3)
  • 2007 UConn (6-4, 1-0) [26-29] 2018 UAB (5-4, 3-2)
Mountain West :

BIG LOSS FOR #21 FRESNO IN A TRAP GAME. OUCH. Down 28-20, Fresno’s Ronnie Rivers had a 53 yard TD run with 47 seconds left and they hit the 2 point pass play to send it to overtime. In 2OT, Fresno missed their field goal while Air Force hit theirs to win. It’s not over yet for Fresno’s Mountain West title hopes, but they’ll need some help, and this likely ends their Playoff chances. Boise State avenged their 2010 loss, holding Colin Kaepernick to 0 TD 3 INT on the night. Nevada is officially eliminated from bowl contention.

  • #21 2018 Fresno State (7-3, 4-2) [35-38] (OT) 1998 Air Force (5-4, 2-3)
  • 2010 Nevada (4-7, 0-5) [6-31] #25 2009 Boise State (8-1, 4-1)
  • 2007 New Mexico (4-6, 3-3) [16-28] 2021 San Diego State (3-6, 1-3)
  • 2000 UNLV (2-7, 1-3) [24-31] 2007 Hawaii (7-3, 3-2)
Sun Belt :

Marshall just keeps on winning, man. They’ll be ranked at some point. Coastal Carolina came back from 21-7 down to beat App State, who’s having a disappointing year. Levi Lewis had 4 TD 0 INT and Elijah Mitchell had 227 rushing yards for Louisiana, who Cajun fried Arkansas State 55-7. Texas State clinches bowl eligibility…on a game winning 57 yard FG as time expired!!

  • 1999 Marshall (8-1, 5-0)
