Best of the Best: Simulating a Season with the Greatest Modern Era Teams
In an effort to figure out how each program’s best modern team stacks up against each other, I’ll be simming the 2024 season schedule. But, instead of using next year’s rosters, I’m using each program’s best team since 1996. By the end of this, we’ll have determined the best team, QB, RB, WR, offensive line, you name it–of the modern era. And we’ll have a full 134-team ranking of where every program’s best team stacks up with each other. I sim one time for every matchup, so some shocking one-off results may occur. That’s part of the fun, anybody’s got a shot to win it all. If you view these posts using the old Reddit layout, you’ll be able to see team and conference flairs.
If you missed the previous weeks/results, the Main hub thread link is here.

DOWN GOES FLORIDA. It would’ve been nearly impossible for them to run the table with their schedule, it’s impressive they made it as far as they did. The Gators led 17-13 at halftime, but 2 touchdown passes from Stetson Bennett and a 20-3 run in the second half gave Georgia a 33-20 lead. Florida had a chance to win late, but Tebow threw an interception with 45 seconds left at the Georgia 38. Mississippi State’s season goes from bad to worse after losing to 2017 UMass…a team that went 4-8 in their season. Somehow the Minutemen have as many wins in this “GOAT” season as they did in their regular year. #19 Tennessee shut down Kentucky, holding QB Terry Wilson to just 10/32 passing with 2 interceptions. Arkansas-Ole Miss were deadlocked at 24 all at the end of the 3rd, the difference being 2 touchdown passes from Tyler Wilson at the end. Texas A&M sends South Carolina to the bottom of the SEC, and Auburn’s looking pretty now with a 6-3 record, maybe making a late Playoff push with #1 Alabama on the schedule.
- #2 2008 Florida (7-1, 4-1) [27-33] 2022 Georgia (4-4, 3-3)
- 2017 Massachusetts (4-5, 0-0) [24-21] 2014 Mississippi State (3-6, 1-4)
- 2018 Kentucky (4-5, 2-5) [3-30] #19 1998 Tennessee (6-2, 3-2)
- 2023 Ole Miss (4-5, 2-3) [24-38] 2011 Arkansas (5-4, 3-3)
- 2012 Texas A&M (5-4, 2-4) [37-33] 2013 South Carolina (3-5, 1-5)
- 2012 Vanderbilt (4-5, 1-5) [14-33] 2010 Auburn (6-3, 4-2)
- Maine [3-30] #20 2000 Oklahoma (7-2, 3-2)

IN THE SAME WEEKEND AS UNBEATEN #2 FLORIDA LOSING, SO TOO DOES UNBEATEN #4 WASHINGTON. #11 USC storms into Seattle on College GameDay, and Lendale White steals a win with a 187 yard 4 touchdown performance. USC’s taken the #1 spot in the Big Ten with a tiebreaker over Washington, but the two could rematch in the title game. In fact, all 3 of the Top 10 Big Ten teams lost this weekend; #6 Ohio State to Penn State, and #8 UCLA to Nebraska. Finally, Penn State and Nebraska fans get the justice from the sim engine they’ve been looking for. Nebraska RB Ahman Green ran for 243 yards with another 133 from Joel Makovicka, 2 touchdowns for each. Wisconsin beats Iowa in a battle of 5-3 teams, Ricky Stanzi might’ve thrown 3 touchdowns, but also 4 interceptions. Michigan also finally gets some love from the simulator, beating 2014 runner-up Oregon. Royce Freeman ran for 200+ yards, but Blake Corum matched him with 130 of his own. Michigan State and Illinois both clinch bowl games at 6-3, while Purdue eliminates Northwestern, giving them their 7th loss.
- #11 2004 USC (7-2, 6-1) [42-35] #4 2023 Washington (8-1, 5-1)
- #6 2019 Ohio State (6-2, 3-2) [6-17] 2005 Penn State (3-5, 2-3)
- #8 1998 UCLA (5-3, 4-2) [17-37] 1997 Nebraska (4-5, 2-4)

- 2014 Oregon (4-5, 3-3) [27-38] 2023 Michigan (4-5, 2-4)
- 2017 Northwestern (2-7, 0-6) [17-60] 1998 Purdue (5-3, 3-2)
- 2020 Indiana (5-4, 2-4) [14-47] 2013 Michigan State (6-3, 4-2)
- 2019 Minnesota (4-5, 1-5) [23-35] 2001 Illinois (6-3, 4-2)

All right, it might be time to start taking Arizona seriously. What their defense just did to McKenzie Milton was obscene. Milton threw 0 touchdowns with 6 interceptions, Arizona DB Chris McAllister with 4 of the picks. He’s the favorite for the Thorpe Award, leading the nation with 11 INTs. #12 Oklahoma State remains tied for the league lead with a win over ASU, Weeden passing for almost 500 yards. Kansas State has recovered from their 4-game skid to win 2 straight now. Texas Tech-Iowa State was a QB duel, Brock Purdy throwing 4 TD 0 INT to Graham Harrell’s 5 TD 0 INT. Tech missed a 41 yard FG in overtime, while Iowa State hit theirs to win it. Baylor puts a shocking beatdown on rival TCU, running up the score at the end. The 2010 TCU team allowed just 12 PPG, but Baylor dropped 70 on them.
- #22 1998 Arizona (7-2, 5-1) [41-27] #14 2017 UCF (6-3, 4-2)
- 1996 Arizona State (2-6, 1-4) [13-51] #12 2011 Oklahoma State (7-2, 5-1)
- 1997 Kansas State (5-4, 2-4) [30-20] 2015 Houston (2-7, 1-5)
- 2008 Texas Tech (4-5, 2-4) [45-48] (OT) 2020 Iowa State (4-4, 2-3)
- 2010 TCU (5-4, 3-3) [23-70] 2013 Baylor (5-4, 3-4)

Clemson’s season nearly ended. But they SURVIVED. An unreal performance from both Louisville and Clemson. Multiple helmet sticker winners from this game. Trevor Lawrence threw a 21 yard TD pass to Tee Higgins with just 23 seconds left to send it to overtime. The two traded TDs in overtime until finally Clemson scored, and Louisville couldn’t convert on 4th down. Brian Brohm had 591 passing yards with 5 TD and 0 INT! Louisville WR Mario Urrutia had 6 catches for 257 yards and 2 TD! Virginia Tech can finally rest as they have their 7th loss, at the hands of fellow dual threat QB Donovan McNabb, ironic given how the sim engine treats that player archetype. A 30-0 second half for Miami helps them beat Duke, 400+ pass yards and 5 TD from Ken Dorsey. #18 Florida State takes care of North Carolina to finish off their ACC record at 6-2–they’ll need help getting into the title game. #10 Pitt stays unbeaten in the ACC and eliminates SMU from bowl contention. #16 Stanford gave up 5 TD passes for Philip Rivers, but did enough to stay atop the ACC.
- #9 2006 Louisville (7-2, 4-2) [54-60] (OT) #7 2018 Clemson (6-2, 4-2)

Memphis picks up a big win over UTSA to improve to 5-0 in the American, they look like a near lock for the title game. Preseason favorite Tulane is also 4-1 after beating Charlotte, Tyjae Spears with 135 rushing yards. Devin Singletary had 177 and 2 TD to beat in-state foe South Florida. Air Force wins the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy after beating both Army and Navy this season, congrats to the Falcons!

Boise takes their anger of losing to UNLV out on San Diego State, punting 0 times. Fresno State wins a HUGE game over Hawaii. Marcus McMaryion is making waves as he outperformed Colt Brennan with a 4 TD performance. It’s undeniable now–the Bulldogs are a legit Mountain West, and Playoff, contender. Wyoming wins a BIG road game against New Mexico, they’re tied for 1st in the Mountain West and nobody wants to talk about it. Marcus Harris had another 10 catch, 125 yard, 2 TD performance, and is still 2nd in the nation in receiving. Colorado State beats Nevada! Nice win for the Rams who’ve had a wild season. Nevada continues to be one of the most disappointing Group of 5 teams.
