The biggest issue with reboots is the fans and audiance likes and is invested in the original characters, so when new characters which we don’t know suddenly come along we don’t care as much and lose interest. However if you spent half a season filled with dozens new characters in a TV contest like setting and carefuly structure it around the main cast that would eventually stay during which time the audiance can get to know them and root for those exact people to “win”, at the end instead of thinking “where is the original cast”, we feel glad that the people we were rooting for actually stayed and the rest of the season continues with a new set of characters but now we are invested enough in them too.
And as old as this show might be and the fact that the main cast was still reccuring during that time - this is still TV writer brilliance.
