X-Files seems like a pretty unconventional choice for a comfort show, given how dark, creepy and downright gross it can get at times but honestly that’s what it’s become for me.
Maybe it’s the fact that I first started watching it in the 90s as a child, and associate with those warm, carefree and nostalgic times. That, coupled with the overall style and tone of the show as well. The amazing chemistry between Mulder and Scully, the incredible, almost tangible atmosphere of the episodes with the moody, overcast Vancouver backdrop (for the first 5 seasons anyway), Mark Snow’s eerie, haunting score, all contributing to how each episode feels like a complete cinematic experience that you can drop into at anytime.
I just find it so immersive and weirdly enough, kind of cozy? It’s hard to explain but anytime I watch the show it just feels like my “happy place”. Maybe because I’ve seen the episodes so many times and I know our intrepid protagonists will always be a beacon of light in the shadowy world of conspiracies and the paranormal.
Anybody else feel this way about The X-Files?
