It shocked me when I went to Wake and discovered we had one of the oldest rivalries in the sport. For those of you who don’t know, Wake v. NC State is the third oldest continuous football rivalry. Yet for all this history this series rarely gets talked about outside of our two fanbases, and there is no official name for this annual rematch. I imagine Wake’s historic ineptitude at football or the general disgust people have for NC State might contribute to this, but given how fun the rivalry has gotten in recent years I’d like to petition this sub to name this game. I’m personally fond of “the little brother brawl” given the inferiority complex Wake and NC State fans tend to have towards Duke and UNC respectively.
Some recent highlights of the rivalry include:
2022: NC State being the final push in our late season collapse, picking off Hartman thrice
2021: Wake essentially winning the Atlantic division by beating State at home
2018: Jamie Newman upsets ranked State’s senior day in Raleigh with Bradley Chubb in attendance
State does lead the series 69-42, but those numbers are inflated from early dominance including a 10 game winning streak before the invention of sliced bread…
