Counting down to the beginning of the season I’m going to attempt to post one player per day for the last 99 matching their jersey number to the days left until kick off. The players will be random. Use this thread to celebrate and Talk About Some DudesTM
Rickey Dixon was a standout defensive back for Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas. He played at the University of Oklahoma from 1984-1987 and played in four straight Orange Bowls and two National Championship games. He was known for coming up big in big games.
He won the Thorpe Award and was a consensus All-American in 1987. He was a key player on the 1985 national championship team.
The defining game of his career perhaps was the “Game of the Century II” against Nebraska in 1987. Nebraska had the #1 offense in the country, was at home and favored to win. Nebraska quarterback Steve Taylor allegedly claimed the Sooners had no chance in the game. Dixon intercepted Taylor twice (including the game clincher.) The win clinched the Orange Bowl for the #2 Sooners.
He finished his four year career in Norman with 170 total tackles and 17 interceptions (second only to Darrel K Royal in Sooners history). His senior year featured 9 of those interceptions for 232 yards — both Oklahoma records.
He was selected 5th overall in the 1988 NFL Draft and had a brief career.
He was selected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2019.
He passed away at the age of 53 in August of 2020 after a 7 year battle with ALS.
