The first time was a teacher in middle school. This was 2003, and multiple girls came forward saying he had touched them inappropriately. Nothing happened to him, they weren’t believed, one of the volunteer parents even told me that the girls were making it up for attention. He was finally charged in 2019 and now he’s in jail for almost 5 years on 20+ counts against 10+ students. His crimes date back to the 1990s.

The second time was a childhood friend of my male friend. They played in a band together and he creeped all the girls out, was generally mysogonistic and terrible. But my friend wouldn’t hear a word against him, wouldn’t do anything. Eventually he was caught at a party trying to undress a girl who was passed out drunk. Still none of the guys in my friend group cared, it became a “funny story” to them, because the girl he tried to assault wasn’t pretty or popular. Eventually he sexually harassed my male friend’s girlfriend one too many times, and they all cut him off. I’m glad they did but pissed it took so long.

And now it’s happened for a third time. A guy I used to be friends with sexually assaulted another friend, and took advantage of the fact that she was young and inexperienced. And absolutely none of our mutual friends care. He’s convinced everyone that it’s all a misunderstanding and that she didn’t really mean it when she said it was sexual assault and she’s changed her mind now. Bullshit; girls don’t change their minds, they just give up because nobody cares and because their abuser tells them it’s no big deal.

And I know how this is going to go, he’s most likely going to do it again because generally sexual crimes are not one-offs. Maybe then people will change their minds, but I’m not hoepful. It shouldn’t have to happen multiple times before people give a shit. And I’m tired of it.
