From the beginning of The Sopranos till around mid 2010s was the Golden Age of TV in my opinion not only because we used to have great TV shows but because they were released with a mostly consistent schedule every year of around 10 to 13 episodes. Shows like The Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, The Shield, The Americans, Hannibal, The Leftovers, Justified, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones etc. were a part of this era and it was genuinely amazing.
I am not saying we don’t get great shows anymore. Like Shogun this year was amazing. But I miss the time when shows of this type of high quality were mostly released around the same time every year instead of waiting a minimum of 2 years. Like there would be a 3 years gap between the first and second seasons of Severance, Peacemaker, Arcane and by that time most people will barely remember why they were invested in any of the storylines or the characters.
I don’t think shows need fancy CGI or production design on the level of movies or A listers. Those have never been the factors that made television a great medium.
