Despite some people starting to turn a bit sour on the (at times) glacial pace of House of the Dragon season 2, I’ve been enjoying it. I certainly don’t think it’s been filler but I do think overall it’s been full of interesting moments and conversations, however if you told me the finale was next week I’d be finding it difficult not calling the second season a little disappointing.
However, I really feel like this highlights the massive flaw in modern TV shows taking so god damn long to make. Season 2 came out one month shy of two years after Season 1. That’s two years of waiting after an ending that clearly teases a Rhaenyra that’s out for blood and revenge in that final shot of season 1. Only to find out that after a two year wait and so far 6 episodes, she wasn’t angry, just lost in herself and still is to the point where she’s not the most interesting character to watch. And you could say that for a fair few characters.
I think it’s also great that the show wants to put in so much effort to set things up for the future but again, modern TV making, I’m possibly not going to see these pay offs for two years. Waiting two years for a season, only for it to be setting up the next season, which maybe another two years away is frustrating.
I think it just shows the nature of TV too and why the “we need the time to make it as good as possible” BS has always annoyed me. It doesn’t matter how much time you give it, how much time you put into writing it, or how much money you put in production value, you can’t guarantee a success. Not that this season has been a failure by any means, but is it sooooooo good that the 2 year gap is justified? Not really other than visually. And I’ll take the downgrade if it means once a year. I don’t really see anyone saying they prefer Season 2 to 1 as it stands. I’m aware there’s still 2 episodes to go but this season doesn’t have the makings of an exciting rewatch so far.
A rant more than a post but hopefully there’s some out there agree with what I’m going for.
