Just got out of seeing Barbie for the first time. It was a great movie, really funny, but deeply personal if you are a woman.
Throughout the whole screening, there was a row of teenage boys who were yelling obscenities at the screen the whole time. To name a few instances:
When Sharon Rooney’s Barbie was on screen, they yelled “FAT BITCH” and laughed
Continuously belched throughout the movie and ate popcorn loudly, dropped things constantly
Ran up and down the stairs
Said “I want to see that (slur)'s titties” during the ending
It got to the point where I and others turned around and asked them to be quiet, but that just made them make fun of us more. Behind me was a row of teenage girls who thanked me and told me they were scared to say anything after the show.
How fucking ironic that we can’t even have the small things that are made for us because people don’t have basic respect for others, and we feel so frightened of men that we can’t even speak up for ourselves? This is mostly a vent but it just goes to show how little respected women’s spaces are in the world.
This happened at a small movie theater and the only people working were teenagers.
