One of my favorite parts of college sports is seeing the jubilation of mid-major college basketball players when they find out they will be playing in the NCAA tournament on Selection Sunday. Will getting a bid to the CFB playoff be as exciting for mid-major football teams and their fans?

I don’t think it will reach that level of excitement until a mid-major beats a power conference team in the playoffs — which could happen as soon as next season. Then it will be the storyline of every future playoff. Can ___ be the next Boise State, which upset an offensively-lacking Iowa in the 2027 playoffs?

Some might say we don’t need proof that mid-majors can do it (See UCF over USC in NY6 bowl, Utah over Bama in BCS bowl). But this isn’t a thought exercise. This is about how everyone will emotionally feel about their mid-major getting a bid and my emotions can’t wrap my head around a mid-major winning a playoff game even though I know it’s possible in my mind.
