Best of the Best: Simulating a Season with the Greatest Modern Era Teams

In an effort to figure out how each program’s best modern team stacks up against each other, I’ll be simming the 2024 season schedule. But, instead of using next year’s rosters, I’m using each program’s best team since 1996. By the end of this, we’ll have determined the best team, QB, RB, WR, offensive line, you name it–of the modern era. And we’ll have a full 134-team ranking of where every program’s best team stacks up with each other.

If you missed the previous weeks/results, the Main hub thread link is here.

SEC :

Stop the presses, LSU HAS LOST. #3 LSU HAS JUST LOST AT HOME TO UCLA. Ed Orgeron eats his “sissy blue” words like a 4-course gumbo meal. Cade McNown threw 4 TD passes for UCLA, earning a helmet sticker for the week, and suddenly LSU looks vulnerable. #5 Tennessee storms into Norman and steals a victory from #8 Oklahoma on GameDay. The Vols took a 21-0 lead in the 3rd quarter before OU rallied to tie it 21-21, but Tennessee hit a late 40 yard FG for the win. #12 Missouri dominates a 3-0 Vanderbilt team, thanks to 280 rushing yards by RB Tony Temple. Texas finally doesn’t lose to a Group of 5 team, Vince Young putting in a flawless shift with 15/15 passes and 4 TD.

  • 1999 Akron (1-3, 0-0) [21-23] 2013 South Carolina (3-1, 1-1)

Big Ten :

Big Ten play is underway! #10 Washington comes out with a 27-0 second half against Northwestern, moving to 4-0 and a 1-0 conference record. #11 Iowa follows suit against #23 Minnesota on the road, winning the Floyd of Rosedale trophy. 2001 Illinois pretty much shocks 1997 Nebraska, winning on a 39 yard walk off FG. USC-Michigan lived up to the hype–USC was down 34-20 late in the 3rd before Reggie Bush took over, rushing for 2 TDs including the game winner. Ohio State wins a slog against a really good Marshall team.

  • 2017 Northwestern (2-2, 0-1) [13-53] #10 2023 Washington (4-0, 1-0)
  • Villanova [19-56] 2002 Maryland (2-2, 0-1)
  • #11 2009 Iowa (4-0, 1-0) [21-10] #23 2019 Minnesota (3-1, 0-1)
  • 2012 Kent State (1-3, 0-0) [10-38] 2005 Penn State (1-2, 0-0)
  • 2001 Illinois (3-1, 1-0) [17-16] 1997 Nebraska (2-2, 0-1)
  • 2004 USC (2-1, 1-0) [41-34] 2023 Michigan (2-2, 0-1)
  • 1999 Marshall (2-1, 0-0) [6-25] #14 2019 Ohio State (3-0, 0-0)
  • 2019 Charlotte (1-3, 0-0) [40-45] 2020 Indiana (3-1, 0-1)
Big 12 :

No real shockers here. Texas Tech beats preseason Big 12 second place favorite Arizona State in a weirdly defensive battle. Oklahoma State’s back on track with a win over Utah. The Utes showed some vulnerability in their 2008 season with a few close wins over so-so teams, and so far haven’t been able to keep up with the Big 12 depth. BYU holds #7 Kansas State to 3 points in the second half, but some might argue Kansas State’s ranking was unjustified. Colorado picks up a nice win over #20 Baylor thanks to a 3 TD 0 INT performance by Koy Detmer.

  • 1996 Arizona State (1-3, 0-1) [10-14] 2008 Texas Tech (3-1, 1-0)
  • 2008 Utah (1-3, 0-2) [9-42] #19 2011 Oklahoma State (3-1, 1-0)
  • #13 2007 Kansas (3-1, 0-1) [10-30] #17 2007 West Virginia (4-0, 1-0)
  • 2012 Arkansas State (1-3, 0-0) [20-48] 2020 Iowa State (2-1, 0-0)
  • #7 1997 Kansas State (3-1, 0-1) [16-20] 1996 BYU (4-0, 1-0)
  • #20 2013 Baylor (3-1, 1-1) [24-28] 1996 Colorado (3-1, 1-0)
  • 2015 Houston (1-3, 0-1) [20-55] #16 2009 Cincinnati (4-0, 1-0)
ACC :

Stanford held Donovan McNabb and Syracuse to under 200 yards on the road for a very nice win. Georgia Tech continues to flounder, as both them and Louisville ran for 300 yards, but Louisville threw for 450 yards compared to Tech’s 50. Speaking of floundering, Virginia Tech is 0-4 after giving up nearly 300 rushing yards to Ray Rice. Cal NEARLY stole a win in Tallahassee, but 2 late FGs from Roberto Aguayo won it at the death. And holy shit, 2018 Clemson is unfair. Trevor Lawrence threw 7 TD 0 INT as Clemson took a 56-7 lead in the second quarter, putting up 87 points by the end of it.

  • #22 2010 Stanford (3-0, 1-0) [29-13] 1996 Syracuse (2-1, 1-1)
  • 2014 Georgia Tech (1-4, 0-3) [14-53] #24 2006 Louisville (3-0, 1-0)
  • 2006 Rutgers (3-0, 0-0) [52-16] 2000 Virginia Tech (0-4, 0-0)

  • 2002 NC State (2-2, 0-1) [27-87] #2 2018 Clemson (3-0, 1-0)
  • #9 2013 Michigan State (3-1, 1-0) [3-22] 2006 Boston College (2-2, 0-1)
  • 2023 James Madison (2-1, 0-0) [16-20] 1997 North Carolina (3-1, 0-0)
  • 2010 TCU (2-2, 0-1) [20-10] 2023 SMU (1-3, 0-0)
  • Youngstown State [10-48] 2021 Pittsburgh (2-2, 0-0)
Pac-12 :

Oregon State is setting up for a run at the Playoff. Wins over Marcus Mariota/Oregon and Drew Brees/Purdue make them a contender not just for the Group of 5 spot but as a possible at-large if things don’t work out against Washington State. Down 34-13 to Purdue, Jonathan Smith fired a 20 yard TD to Chad Johnson to win it with 1:10 left. As for Washington State, their focus shifts to winning the Pac-12 after losing to San Jose State.

  • 1998 Purdue (2-1, 0-0) [34-36] #18 2000 Oregon State (4-0, 0-0)
  • 2020 San Jose State (4-0, 1-0) [37-34] 2018 Washington State (2-2, 0-0)
Independents :

Notre Dame has a win! They didn’t quite cover the spread at -6.5, but a bowl isn’t out of the question now. Congrats to 2007 UConn as I wasn’t familiar with your game, 4-0 record so far.

  • 2003 Miami (OH) (0-3, 0-0) [24-30] 2018 Notre Dame (1-3, 0-0)
  • 2017 FAU (2-2, 1-1) [23-28] 2007 UConn (4-0, 1-0)
  • CCSU [0-46] 2017 Massachusetts (2-2, 0-0)
American :

Masterful performance by 2019 Memphis against 2015 Navy, shutting down Heisman finalist Keenan Reynolds. Wyoming’s Brian Lee notched 1 sack, 2 interceptions, and a shutout against North Texas, nice win for the Pokes. Temple was down 17-3 at halftime to Utah State, but 100+ yard rushing performances from Jahad Thomas and Ryquell Armstead thrust them to a come-from-behind win. Miami (FL) shows up here having played USF, and the Canes needed a 21-0 4th quarter to escape Tampa with a win.

  • Houston Christian [10-33] 2021 UTSA (3-1, 0-0)
  • 2019 Memphis (2-2, 1-0) [48-9] 2015 Navy (2-1, 1-1)
  • 1996 Wyoming (2-2, 0-0) [24-0] 2013 North Texas (1-3, 0-0)
  • 2012 Utah State (2-2, 0-0) [20-25] 2016 Temple (1-3, 0-1)

  • 2008 Rice (3-1, 0-1) [10-22] 2018 Army (1-2, 1-1)
Mountain West :

Upset for New Mexico over the 3.5 point favorite Bulldogs.

  • Portland State [13-51] #21 2009 Boise State (3-0, 0-0)
  • 2018 Fresno State (2-2, 0-1) [24-33] 2007 New Mexico (2-2, 1-0)
  • Northern Iowa [3-31] 2007 Hawaii (4-0, 0-0)
  • 2004 UTEP (2-2, 0-1) [7-20] 1997 Colorado State (3-1, 0-0)
  • Eastern Washington [10-63] 2010 Nevada (3-2, 0-0)
Sun Belt :

Virginia pulls off a nice upset before starting ACC play, running for an 8 yard TD to take the lead with 4 minutes left. Thomas Jones continues to be one of the best RBs in the country. Louisiana pulls off a STUNNER vs Tulane, throwing a game winning 7 yard TD pass with 5 seconds left. Tulane’s 1-3 with a +18 point differential, losing to Kansas State, Oklahoma, and Louisiana all by one possession. South Alabama pulls off an upset against App State, holding them to less than 250 yards, and suddenly the Jags are 4-0 looking like a Sun Belt dark horse.

  • 1998 Virginia (2-2, 0-1) [24-21] 2020 Coastal Carolina (3-1, 0-0)
  • 2022 Tulane (1-3, 0-0) [34-35] 2020 Louisiana (3-0, 0-0)
