I looked through every payout game of 2024 to find the worst game of the season. I expected to find a few but actually only one stood out as being irredeemably bad. Other people might have different definitions, but for me a truly ugly game meets the below criteria.
- There is an insurmountable skill gap between the teams
- The distance is so far that the smaller school’s fans don’t even have a chance to attend, and the larger school’s fans likely won’t have heard of the opponent.
- The game is not the result of a last minute or otherwise awkward scheduling issue, and it is not a conference game.
There is only one game that meets all three requirements, and that is the 2,000 mile journey Merrimack has to take to get beat down by Air Force. At the time of scheduling the two schools had a Sagarin rating difference of over 40 points (57 is the highest of 2024 when Tennessee Tech goes to UGA). This definitely isn’t a scheduling problem as it is set for Week 1 Saturday over a year in advance, AND Air Force has already inked two more terrible teams from the same region in Bucknell and Duquesne.
Can any Air Force fans explain why they keep doing this?
