Counting down to the beginning of the season I’m going to attempt to post one player per day for the last 99 matching their jersey number to the days left until kick off. The players will be random. Use this thread to celebrate and Talk About Some DudesTM
Mike Rozier’s recruitment to Nebraska was an accident. He was playing for Woodrow Wilson High School in Pennsauken, NJ and happened to be playing an opponent that assistant head coach Frank Solich was scouting. Frank was blown away by Rozier and recruited him to Nebraska.
After spending his freshman year at Coffeyville Junior College he joined Nebraska in 1981 and shared snaps with entrenched starter and superstar Roger Craig. By the fall of 1982 he had taken over the tailback role and pushed Craig to fullback.
As a junior in 1982 Rozier broke the Nebraska single season rushing record with 1689 rushing yards and a 12-1 record. Their only loss coming to national champion Penn State. Rozier was a consensus All-American and finished 10th in the Heisman voting.
His senior year of 1983 saw Nebraska’s rushing attack reach deadly heights. As a team they averaged 52 points and 401 yards rushing per game. Rozier led the nation with 2486 total yards (2148 rushing) and 29(!) combined touchdowns. He averaged 7.8 yards per carry and stands as the 3rd highest mark to date. In their game against Kansas Rozier set the then-record single game record with 285 rushing yards. 230 of them in the first half alone. His last four games of the regular season saw Rozier exceed 200 yards in each of them. He was again a consensus All-American. He also earned the Player of the Year award from UPI and the Sporting News. He also won the Chic Hartley, Walter Camp, Maxwell and Heisman Trophies.
He stands as Nebraska’s all time leading rusher with 4780 yards and a 7.2 average. His 49 TDs are second only to Eric Crouch in Nebraska history.
He was drafted and played his first two years in the USFL and was eventually selected 2nd overall in the 1984 Supplemental draft. He spent 9 years in the NFL. He was a Pro Bowler in 1987 and 1988.
He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
