The ACC powerhouse will not have their first ACC matchup until week 5 when SMU hosts the reigning ACC champions. Welcome to the Power 4, SMU. They should start out 3-0 fairly easily. SMU also only plays 3 games at a time due to having 3 bye weeks spaced out evenly (week 0 game gives them an extra bye week). TCU is winnable but I’m not sure they’ll get it done. I still have faith in them to represent the ACC. FSU and Louisville will likely humble them though. Nevertheless, I think SMU can be at least a mid tier ACC team in their first year which is quite impressive.
After their next bye week they play Stanford, Duke and Pitt which I think are all winnable for SMU. Then they wrap up the season against Boston College, UVA and Cal. Their schedule is by no means difficult but given the jump to the ACC it will probably still be an adjustment. SMU is definitely on the rise though and I think they will be in the top half of the ACC this year. I’m curious to see how Rhett Lashlee fares in the ACC and then compare that to Mario Cristobal to see what Miami missed out on. Sadly they don’t play this year.
I’d put SMU’s ceiling at 9-3 which I think all SMU fans would be thrilled by in their first season in the ACC. They play a lot of bad ACC teams and have lots of bye weeks to rest in between their bursts of games which helps a lot. Their floor is 5-7. Assuming they aren’t ready yet for the ACC they might struggle but I think 9-3 is more likely than 5-7. They might struggle but I think they’ll reach a bowl game. It’ll be interesting to see how they do in the ACC this year and I’m sure SMU fans are just excited to be here. I have to imagine it’s one of the most exciting seasons ever for SMU fans, if not the most exciting ever. Good luck to SMU and welcome to the ACC (at least you guys aren’t all the way in California).
