Are people aware of the metaphor the carries through the new Mr and Mrs smith? I see a lot of criticism but a lot of folks seem to miss the fact that each episode takes a relationship stage and tells the story through spy stuff. From internet dating to divorce, the show both shows and tells us about these stages. There is the explicit relationship between the leads, but the action around them is all telling the same story. My favorite episode is when they have a “kid” but he’s just a goon that they have to protect and get to a safe house.
To me, the metaphor was the best part of the show. It makes the jokes funnier, the action meaningful, and it really deepens the performances of the leads because there is so much subtext going on around them tbat their performances are playing into.
Is this discussed often? Do you think people miss this layer? Should the show made this more obvious or would that have ruined the art? It was really fun to make the discovery on my own but I’m sad that a lot of people I know missed that part entirely…
