Best of the Best: Simulating a Season with the Greatest Modern Era Teams
In an effort to figure out how each program’s best modern team stacks up against each other, I’ll be simming the 2024 season schedule. But, instead of using next year’s rosters, I’m using each program’s best team since 1996. By the end of this, we’ll have determined the best team, QB, RB, WR, offensive line, you name it–of the modern era. And we’ll have a full 134-team ranking of where every program’s best team stacks up with each other.

Folks…WE’VE. GOT. UPSETS. #5 Oklahoma State goes on the road for what they think is a cupcake game vs in-state Tulsa, but instead Gus Malzahn cooks up a master gameplan, never trailing and putting up 41 points to beat Mike Gundy’s finest ever team. And Texas, where do we begin? After beating 2023 Michigan 37-3, the Longhorns SWORE they were done with upsets, only to lose 27-26 to UTSA on a walk-off field goal. Despite some teams having worse records, Texas might be the biggest disappointment of the season thus far, having lost to both Colorado State and UTSA. They’ll basically need to be flawless the rest of the way to make the Playoff–at least they’re unbeaten in the SEC.
In addition to the upsets, some teams experienced near-catastrophe at the hands of the Group of 5. #4 Florida State went blow-for-blow with Memphis, who even led 41-31 at one point in the 4th quarter. Oklahoma and Tulane have a friendly history, with OU having let Tulane move their 2021 season opener to Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium due to Hurricane Ida. Tulane gave it their best shot against the Sooners, taking a 13-10 lead in the 4th, but OU prevailed, their second straight week with a too-close-for-comfort win.
#6 Florida hosted Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M for College GameDay, and the game arguably exceeded the larger-than-life hype that comes with a Tebow-Manziel matchup. Florida came in as a 6.5 point favorite and basically a consensus pick among bettors. With Florida leading 29-21 with just 7 seconds left, Manziel found Ben Malena in the end zone for a 10 yard TD, hit the 2 point conversion, and sent the game to OT. After the two traded blows for 2 possessions each, Florida won it in the 3rd overtime with a TD and 2 point conversion, as Texas A&M fell short on their own try. Manziel threw for nearly 350 yards with another 100 on the ground, almost pulling off the upset in the Swamp.
Rounding up the other games, 2007 West Virginia got revenge on Pitt, only this time against Pitt’s best team of the last 30 years instead of the 4-7 squad in '07. #11 Cincinnati survived a close one on the road against rival Miami (OH), with RB Isaiah Pead (who aimed to compete in the 2020 Paralympics post-playing career) scoring the winning TD after being down 33-34. 2000 Oregon State sticks it to 2014 Oregon for leaving them to die in the Pac-2, running up the score late for a 44-10 win in the Civil War.
