Before COVID and the real push for streaming, each decade generally had a show or shows that was in some way a cultural phenomenon. Not just big, but so widespread that you could walk into the office the next day and the first thing you would hear is about last night’s episode.
There are a ton: Game of Thrones, Lost, 24, Seinfeld, The Sopranos, pre-COVID Doctor Who, old X-Files etc.
But in a post COVID world it seems like no show has come anywhere near close to those heights since GoT ended. Some have stood out more than others in the public discourse like Stranger Things but its often very short lived before they fade into the background again.
Part of this could be due to COVID altering release schedules and making it so that 2+ years in between seasons is the norm. It could also be due to oversaturation of content in general. But we are halfway through the 2020s and not a single show has impacted pop culture in any way yet. Is this something that will happen again?
