Top 25

Some big shakeups after early season results. Texas falls from #5 to #18 after losing to Colorado State, and #13 Nebraska falls out of the Top 25 entirely after losing to UTEP. West Virginia is this week’s biggest riser, going from unranked to #12 thanks to their 40-0 destruction of Penn State. The season’s still early and we’re working out the kinks of who the true playoff contenders are, but everyone in the top 8 feels pretty legit. Someone snuck in Wisconsin and Arizona State into the top 10, but if they have staying power, they’ll show it.

Conference Standings

SEC :

Who would’ve thought, after 1 week, the two SEC teams with losses were #4 Georgia and #5 Texas. It’s not getting any easier for Texas, who travels to #5 Michigan this week. Georgia will improve to 1-1 as they face Tennessee Tech, unless they pull an Army. For the rest of teams, it’s business as usual, but Vanderbilt continues lurking as a darkhorse after beating Michael Vick and Virginia Tech.

Big Ten :

Not a great opening weekend for the Big 10, as USC, Nebraska, and Penn State all start 0-1. Even UCLA and Maryland were darkhorse playoff contenders that now have a loss on their resume. 1997 Nebraska has a big upcoming game against 1996 Colorado, so we’ll see if Scott Frost can run the ball against the Buffs. Michigan can establish themselves as a title favorite if they beat 2005 Texas this week.

Big 12 :

TCU lost to a really good, Andrew Luck-led Stanford team, and the rest of the conference handled their business. Big games this week include 2013 Baylor at 2008 Utah, and 2021 Pitt at 2009 Cincinnati.

Lots of playoff dreamers here! And Georgia Tech. I have faith Justin Thomas can turn things around though and at least make a bowl.

Pac-12 :

2 big tests this week. Oregon State at 2021 San Diego State, and Washington State hosts 2008 Texas Tech. The Mike Leach bowl should be fun.

  1. 2000 Oregon State 1-0 (0-0)
  2. 2018 Washington State 1-0 (0-0)
Independents :

UMass will try to pull off their second straight upset, visiting 2000 Toledo this week after beating 2022 Eastern Michigan last week.

  1. 2007 UConn 1-0
  2. 2017 Massachusetts 1-0
  3. 2018 Notre Dame 0-1
American :

The playoff suspects stay unbeaten. Disappointed in Army and FAU. No telling where this conference will go.

Mountain West :

Hawaii looks scary, beating a pretty good 1998 UCLA team. This conference is probably a 3-horse race between them, Nevada, and Boise. Boise has a huge “go big or go home” matchup against 2014 Oregon this weeek.

MAC :

Look for Northern Illinois @ Notre Dame as a potential upset. Jordan Lynch was a Heisman finalist, and Notre Dame is reeling from an 0-1 start. Lots of G5 spot playoff contenders in this conference, although Miami (OH) fumbled their first test against Northwestern.
