I just finished Mare of Easttown and it was so bad. I really really disliked it.
The writing was so lazy and predictable. Like, there are missing girls so of course all of the missing girls happen to be prostitutes, there’s a thief and of course the thief is a black guy, there’s an “unfit mother” and of course the unfit mother is a drug addict, there’s a priest and of course the priest has an alleged history of molesting little girls, it’s a murder mystery so of course someone is being framed, it’s a small town so of course there’s… casual incest?
It’s just a lot of tragic small-town mystery cliche’s thrown into one story. It’s overwhelmingly but unnecessarily miserable (like did the missing girls mother really need to have cancer, too?). But was also too cliche to take seriously.
The small-town Midwest accents were so forced and cringey. None of the characters were very likable at all except for the new cop who was killed off (conveniently so that Mare doesn’t have to choose between him and the other guy).
Anyway, I want to watch Sharp Objects but feel like I just wasted my time with Mare of Sadtown. Is it better?
