Projected Standings

SEC :

The SEC is by far the biggest bloodbath, with the projected top 8 all being former national champions. The conference also includes former Heisman winners Devonta Smith, Vince Young, Joe Burrow, Tim Tebow, Cam Newton, and Johnny Manziel, the latter of whom projects to barely finish in the top 10 of the standings. 2000 Oklahoma brings one of the best defenses in the country, and 1998 Tennessee features 2 NFL Pro Bowlers at RB in Travis Henry and Jamal Lewis. 2007 Missouri leads the pack among the non-national champions, but look for Steve Spurrier/South Carolina and Bobby Petrino/Arkansas to make noise. 2012 Vanderbilt is the dark horse, with Aaron Rodgers’ brother Jordan at QB and James Franklin at head coach, from a team that went 9-4 and 9-1 against teams outside of the top 10 that year.

Big Ten :

The Big Ten is very…even. What it lacks in top end talent (highest ranked team is Michigan at #8 preseason) it makes up for in depth. 2006 Rutgers is projected 12th, and that’s from arguably the best season in school history where they went 11-2 with a win over a #3 Louisville team. The reigning national champions Michigan head this group which features two other former champs in 2004 USC and 1997 Nebraska, but watch out for 2019 Ohio State, who some consider the best team to never win a national title. Michael Penix will play for BOTH Washington and Indiana, the latter of whom would be grateful just to make a bowl game. Also making appearances is 2013 Michigan State’s “No Fly Zone”, 2019 Minnesota’s cinderella season, 2001 Illinois who went 10-2 with a Sugar Bowl appearance, and 1998 Purdue with Drew Brees.

Big 12 :

I have no idea how this conference is going to end up. I could see an argument for about 10 different teams winning the Big 12 here. 2011 Oklahoma State is the favorite, who many people thought should’ve played for a national title that season. A sneaky #2 pick is 1996 Arizona State, who were seconds away from winning a national title with QB Jake Plummer. Outside of that, it’s a bevy of former G5 teams, including 2010 TCU, 2017 UCF, and 2008 Utah, all of whom received #1 votes in the final AP Poll of their respective seasons!!! 2007 West Virginia (Pat White, Steve Slaton), 1997 Kansas State (Heisman runner-up QB Michael Bishop) and 2013 Baylor (52.4 PPG) are all serious dark horse contenders. This is just another very deep conference. 1998 Arizona went 12-1, and they’re projected 11th. Keep your eye on QB Steve Sarkisian and 1996 BYU.

ACC :

This is a 3-headed dragon. Clemson, Miami, and Florida State are all titans of this season, with realistic national title aspirations. I have 2018 Clemson as the 2nd best team overall of the last 50 years, and 2001 Miami is undoubtedly the most talented team in college football history, featuring NFL Pro Bowlers at almost every position. 2013 Florida State’s entire starting lineup made the NFL. The rest of the conference features some of the best QB talent in the country, with Andrew Luck (Stanford), Michael Vick (Virginia Tech), Aaron Rodgers (Cal), Kenny Pickett (Pittsburgh), Matt Ryan (Boston College), Donovan McNabb (Syracuse), and Philip Rivers (NC State). 2023 SMU and 2013 Duke are in for a tough season, but it would be amazing if the formerly Group of 5 Ponies can break a bowl in this bloodbath.

Pac-12 :

One game to rule them all. 2000 Oregon State is a sneaky playoff contender–that team featured Chad Johnson and TJ Houshmandzadeh, and beat #10 Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl 41-9. Washington State could make noise with Minshew magic, as the Cougs have a pretty manageable 2024 schedule. The winner of the Pac-12 could easily take the 5th conference champion slot over the G5 in the Playoffs.

  1. 2000 Oregon State
  2. 2018 Washington State

Independents :

Is Notre Dame good enough to get an at-large bid to the Playoff? I think there’s a good chance. Massachusetts might be the worst team in this entire thing. 2007 UConn really wasn’t a bad team, going 9-4 and winning a share of the Big East.

  1. 2018 Notre Dame
  2. 2007 UConn
  3. 2017 Massachusetts

American :

2022 Tulane is back! The same one who beat USC in the Cotton Bowl (FUCK). They look to try and be the G5 Playoff representative, the same way they were the New Years 6 representative in 2022. 2019 Memphis features Mike Norvell at head coach, and a bunch of NFL talent like Kenneth Gainwell, Antonio Gibson, and Calvin Austin. 2015 Navy features fan favorite QB Keenan Reynolds, who set the NCAA record for career rushing TDs during his time there. South Florida does NOT have their Quinton Flowers team, instead opting for 2007 when they beat #5 West Virginia and #17 Auburn. 2017 FAU features Lane Kiffin at coach, and 2008 Tulsa and 2008 Rice scored a looot of points. 2018 Army took #5 Oklahoma to overtime and beat Houston 70-14 in their bowl, so they could make noise. Finally, don’t sleep on 1996 East Carolina. They beat #12 Miami (FL) 31-6 that year, along with NC State and South Carolina. Giant killer stuff.

Mountain West :

“In another life, I think I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you” - Kellen Moore and Colin Kaepernick, probably. The 3x opponents find themselves matched up for a final time, both projected to make the Mountain West title game. This Boise team IS good enough to win it all, as long as they can avenge the 2010 team and beat Nevada. The rest of the conference is pretty stacked. 1998 Air Force went 12-1 with a #10 final ranking. 2012 Utah State featured cult classic QB Chuckie Keeton and finished #16. 2020 SJSU had a 7-0 regular season with Nick “ass, my dude” Starkel at QB. 2007 Hawaii needs no introduction with the late great QB Colt Brennan. 1996 Wyoming has one of the Biletnikoff favorites in WR Marcus Harris, who left the NCAA as the all-time leading receiver.

  1. 2009 Boise State
  2. 2010 Nevada
  3. 1998 Air Force

  10. 1996 Wyoming
  11. 2007 New Mexico
  12. 2000 UNLV

Sun Belt :

It doesn’t get much closer than the Sun Belt East. The top 4 teams (1999 Marshall, 2020 Coastal, 2019 App State, 2023 JMU) feature a combined record of 48-4! That was not the Marshall team with Randy Moss, but it did have Chad Pennington at QB, and the defense ranked #1 in the country, allowing just 10.5 PPG. Recent fans remember how good 2020 Coastal Carolina was. Outside of that, it’s a lot of squads with really solid team play. App State, James Madison, Louisiana, Southern Miss, and Troy could all win this thing.
