WE’RE GOING THROUGH EACH P4 TEAM’S SCHEDULE AND PICKING EVERY GAME.
Today we have the Iowa State Cyclones.
After having their worst year since Matt Campbell’s first season in Ames, the Cyclones bounced back with a winning record in 2023. Their 6th in Campbell’s 8 seasons. With traditional powers Texas and Oklahoma gone to the SEC, the opportunity to reach the new Big12 mountain top is there for the taking.
Rocco Becht returns for his sophomore campaign along with 7 other starters on offense. The defense returns 9 starters and will remain steady at worst, but should be a top 3 unit in the conference.
The schedule sets up nicely for them, as most of the biggest tests will come later in the season. They’d love to win the Cy-Hawk game, but don’t need to in order to make it to Dallas. A 4-1 start should be demanded before traveling to Morgantown for a crucial midseason game. A win there would cement this team as a serious conference contender, however I think they fall just short.
The final 5 weeks are no small task. A 4-1 record through this stretch would be an incredible accomplishment. Have to take care of Texas Tech and Cincinnati at home and try to get one of the road games at Kansas and Utah.
I suspect 2-3 losses going into Farmageddon, and that game could be for a spot in the Big12 title game. We will see which team is able to stay healthier and get the bigger step from their returning QB’s, but I like the Cyclones at home. It remains to be seen though if 7-2 would get them to Dallas after all.
How do you see it?
