Several years ago, I remember there being an anti-IMG sentiment making waves among some head coaches of FBS schools in Texas. I posted about a couple of them here on Reddit when Tom Herman discouraged Texas recruits from transferring to IMG, and Matt Rhule said that Baylor wouldn’t recruit IMG players. The Texas High School Coaches Association also publicly supported their position (obviously).
My question is: Are there still any TX coaches who have expressed this view publicly?
I know there are some TX coaches who are very big on getting in-state recruits, e.g. TXST’s GJ Kinne - but that’s not quite the same as openly taking a negative stance on a talent-sink like IMG. (And besides, idk how many IMG players are realistically in TXST’s recruiting pool anyway.)
I get that some of the anti-IMG sentiment was probably just pandering to THSCA to some extent, but I didn’t keep tabs on Herman and Rhule to see if they really stuck to their guns on avoiding IMG players. Yes, there have been major changes to the CFB landscape with NIL and college transfer rules, but I don’t really see how those would affect an anti-IMG position. I was reminded of all this today by SMU’s high profile flip of 4* QB Ty Hawkins, just one day after Hawkins announced he would be transferring from Johnson HS (San Antonio) to IMG. On the one hand, I understand why TXHS coaches are against this. But, on the other hand, burning TCU for a major recruit is obviously too good of an opportunity for Lashlee to pass-up (and was probably in the works long before Hawkins announced his transfer to IMG).
Was the anti-IMG sentiment just a fad?
