This is something I’ve always wondered. When the SWC fell apart and Texas/A&M/Tech/Baylor moved on to the Big 12, you had TCU/SMU/Houston/Rice left over. Out of those 4, 3 were brought to the WAC, with Houston opting to look east and become a founding member of CUSA. Was there a reason for UH to move elsewhere? A public/private school split? Would having them in the WAC change anything as of today?
A better hypothetical to me is: what if all 4 schools joined CUSA in 1996? You wouldn’t have the WAC balloon up to 16 members, and likely no Mountain West forming. Maybe the Big West stays around for a little longer, or maybe the early days of the Sun Belt look a little different with more western schools looking for a home.
