I saw this question come up on ACC PM yesterday during their coverage of SMU’s party celebrating joining the ACC. They had head coach Rhett Lashlee on as a guest and they were talking about SMU’s success last season, winning the AAC championship, as well as their new opponents this year, including defending ACC champions Florida State.
Coach Lashlee remarked on how it will be interesting to have two ‘defending’ conference champions playing an in-conference game as a result of realignment and asked when was the last time such a thing occurred.
Intrigued, I went and looked this up - going only as far back as the 2011ish realignment. Turns out that it happens more frequently than I expected. Thought y’all might find this odd bit of trivia interesting.
