It’s July 1, the day when realignment moves become official. Except for the ones that become official on some other date. But regardless, it’s as good a time as any to make a list of all of them. And as everyone knows by know, there are a lot of big ones this year.
As in previous years, this list focuses on football and basketball. Schools that sponsor football are in bold.
Division I
- Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah (all FBS) leave the Pac-12 for the Big 12.
- Army football (FBS), formerly independent, joins the American. Other sports remain in the Patriot League.
- Bryant football (FCS) leaves the Big South–OVC Football Association for the CAA. Other sports remain in the America East.
- California and Stanford (both FBS) leave the Pac-12 for the ACC.
- Chicago State, formerly independent, joins the NEC.
- Kennesaw State leaves the ASun (FCS) for CUSA (FBS). (KSU played an independent football schedule last season rather than being part of the UAC.)
- Mercyhurst leaves the PSAC (D2) for the NEC (FCS).
- Merrimack and Sacred Heart (both FCS) leave the NEC for the MAAC. Both will be independent in football.
- Oklahoma and Texas (both FBS) leave the Big 12 for the SEC.
- Oregon, UCLA, USC, and Washington leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten.
- Oregon State and Washington State (both FBS) join the WCC on a two-year agreement in all the sports the conference sponsors except baseball, in which OSU will be independent and WSU will be in the MWC. Both will be independent in football, with a MWC scheduling alliance.
- Robert Morris football (FCS) leaves the Big South–OVC Football Association for the NEC. Other sports remain in the Horizon.
- SMU (FBS) leaves the American for the ACC.
- Stephen F. Austin (FCS) leave the WAC/UAC for the Southland.
- UTRGV leaves the WAC for the Southland.
- West Georgia leaves the Gulf South (D2) for the ASun/UAC (FCS).
- Western Illinois football (FCS) leaves the MVFC for the Big South–OVC Football Association. WIU’s other sports joined the OVC last year.
- IUPUI is now IU Indy.
Reclassification updates
- Jacksonville State, James Madison, and Sam Houston State have completed their reclassification to FBS.
- Kennesaw State is in its second and final year of reclassification to FBS. Delaware and Missouri State are in their first year. All three are ineligible for the FBS and FCS postseasons.
- Bellarmine, Tarleton State, UC San Diego, and Utah Tech have completed their Division I reclassification periods and are now eligible for the postseason.
- No teams are in the final year of reclassification.
- Lindenwood, Queens, Southern Indiana, Stonehill, and Texas A&M Commerce are in their third year of the normal four-year reclassification period.
- St. Thomas is in its fourth year of reclassification, with one year remaining since they’re moving up from D3.
- Le Moyne is its second year of four.
- Merrimack and West Georgia are set to begin their first year of four.
Future changes
- Delaware (FCS, CAA) joins CUSA (FBS) in 2025… Grand Canyon and Seattle (WAC) join the WCC in 2025… Massachusetts (FBS, A-10/football independent) joins the MAC in 2025… Missouri State (FCS, MVC/MVFC) joins CUSA (FBS) in 2025… Richmond (FCS, CAA football) joins the Patriot League for football… UTRGV football begins play in 2025 in the Southland.
Division II
- Anderson (SC) football begins play, competing in the SAC.
- Arkansas–Fort Smith leaves the Lone Star for the MIAA.
- Erskine football leaves the SAC for the Gulf South for just one season, before Conference Carolinas football begins play in 2025.
- Jessup, Menlo, and Vanguard leave the GSAC (NAIA) for the PacWest.
- Lincoln (MO) leaves the MIAA and football independence for the GLVC.
- Mercyhurst leaves the PSAC for the NEC (D1).
- Northeastern State football will be independent for at least three years while other sports remain in the MIAA.
- Notre Dame (OH) (Mountain East) closes.
- Point Park leaves the RSC (NAIA) for the Mountain East.
- Post football, formerly independent, joins the Northeast-10. Other sports remain in the CACC.
- Roosevelt leaves the CCAC/MSFA (NAIA) for the GLIAC.
- St. Augustine’s (CIAA) lost accreditation and it’s unlikely they’ll be allowed to stay in the NCAA; at the very least, they’ve suspended football.
- St. Rose (Northeast-10) closes.
- Shorter leaves the Gulf South for Conference Carolinas. Football will be independent for one season before Conference Carolinas begins sponsorship in 2025.
- Sul Ross State leaves the ASC (D3) for the Lone Star.
- Trevecca Nazarene leaves the Great Midwest for the Gulf South.
- West Georgia leaves the Gulf South for the ASun/UAC (D1).
