As an avid RateYourMusic user, I sometimes lose myself in the thrill of mindlessly searching through some of the most unusual discographies for either unknowns or big-time celebrities and athletes. With NFL athletes especially, it’s quite surprising how many have entered the music scene, and it’s even more of a surprise when you find someone whose musical capabilities are, at best, tolerable.
This is when I ran into this page after discovering that Brett Favre had some singing credits on the site. What I found was a fully-fledged country album that not only contained efforts from notable country singers like Toby Keith, Glen Campbell, and others but also contained guest vocals from NFL stars on every track. The album was released in 1996 and contains vocals from the most popular players of the time including Brett Favre, Troy Aikman, and Herschel Walker, as well as retired players such as Terry Bradshaw and then Cowboys Special Teams coordinator Joe Avezzano.
I immediately had to find a copy of this thing, but it wasn’t easy. The album isn’t available on any streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud) and although I did find a YouTube playlist for NFL Country, It only had half of the album’s songs and a version of “You Never Know Just How Good You’ve Got It” that doesn’t have the Terry Bradshaw feature. I was able to find a version through Internet Archive, but it only contained the 30-second MP3 samples that are displayed on the page. Despite that, I was able to find some other cool stuff about NFL Country on IA, such as The album cover and inside booklet.
As someone who doesn’t listen to country music, or has much knowledge about country music in general, I’m not entirely sure which of these are original songs, or just covers of existing songs. I will say it is pretty amusing to hear players like Brett Favre and Troy Aikman sing. The song “Another Broken Heart” with defensive lineman Esera Tuaolo is a generic and cheesy 90s RnB slow jam that somehow made it onto a country album. Outside of that, everything else here just seems like your run-of-the-mill contemporary country song, except with the novelty of NFL players attempting, and sometimes failing, to sing.
If anyone has a rip of this album, I’d love to get to hear the hidden gems that have been hiding from us for so long. It’s cool to see this small, but fascinating, part of NFL history that I’m sure many people don’t have a clue about or just have faint memories of. Anyways, here is the official tracklist:
