I like Star Trek it’s a great franchise that has it’s ups and downs, but for me Star Trek has never gotten better than Deep Space Nine. In the 90s the next generation was coming to an end and only had a couple years left by the time this show started and a few years later Star Trek Voyager came out and these two shows ran pretty much throughout the 90s. Voyager is a fun show and I believe it always had the better ratings of the two Treks but for me DS9 raised the bar for story telling in Star Trek.
The first two seasons of DS9 can be kind of slow at times but the show does a lot of good world building that will play out over the rest of the show, it introduces some great recurring characters that will have characters arcs throughout the run of the show. It tells a story of politics, war the trauma of war, characters with a mysterious past whose allegiances are a mystery. It starts to develop ongoing story arcs some that play out over the course of the show with some episodes building on the last. Characters grew and changed as the show progressed, they had to make decisions that weren’t always black and white. Some episodes like the season one episode Duet or the season 2 episode the wire just have some fantastic acting in it.
Because of it’s story telling this show didn’t have much play in syndication it may not have ever ran in syndication, maybe it did in some places, but it wasn’t like other trek shows at the time where you could show them pretty much in any order.
