Here is a year-by-year list of the record holder for passing yards through every number of years played up to the all-time record holder Tom Brady with 89,214 through 23 years. Brady never led through years 1-21. Drew Brees retiring after 20 years and Brady playing for 23 was enough to push Brady into 1st all-time after his 22nd season.
The biggest takeaway / shock for me is Matt Ryan. No one in history had more passing yards through 9-14 seasons than Matty Ice. His impact to this degree was lost on me. This should be a Matt Ryan appreciation post.
Justin Herbert is racking up the yards, with the most ever through his 4th year. Andrew Luck continues to own the rookie record with 4,374, beating out Herbert by 36 yards. Luck’s record will fall this year when Caleb Williams becomes the first 4,000 passer in Bears history and the record books are re-written in dark navy and orange.
Peyton Manning is also on this table, doing Peyton Manning things all over it.
Obligatory caveats
- 17-game seasons since 2021, 16-game seasons since 1978, 14-game seasons before that.
- This is straight up volume, and I’m not attempting to make any era adjustments or evaluate efficiency. Different eras have various rules, pace of play, and pass/run rates which is a factor when looking at historical numbers.
