The other day I got curious and started gathering some unexpected Euros trivia. Here are some interesting ones:
- Rio Ferdinand, despite having 81 caps for England and 3 appearances in World Cups (1998, 2002, 2006), has never played in a Euro;
- Portugal holds the record for consecutive group stage qualifications, 9 out of 9, making them the 5th best team overall in terms of points despite only being the 10th country with the most appearances in the tournament;
- The first hat-trick in the history of the Euros only appeared in the 5th edition in 1976 by Dieter Müller in a West Germany vs. Yugoslavia match;
- Greece had a total of 0 games won in the history of the European Championships at the beginning of the Euro 2004. Nowadays, they have a total of 5 wins, 4 of which were in 2004, and the other one was in the Euro 2012.
Do you know any interesting and unexpected Euro trivia or statistics?
