Until today, I didn’t appreciate how much the MAC has cornered the market on schools early in the alphabet - Central Michigan is the fifth MAC team in the top 10 alphabetically of non-P4 schools. Jim McElwain has pretty well treaded water since his arrival in Michigan, but this season might be bleak enough that he’ll see some sharks circling if he doesn’t get a talent infusion. The Chippewas return only 58% of their productivity (ranking 84th) from a 5-7 team that neither FPI (-10.5) nor Sagarin (55.11) are particularly high on. Throw in a 247 recruiting rating of 142.13 (10th in the MAC, 107th nationally) and a transfer portal ranking of 7.92 (11th in the MAC, 130th nationally) that saw only 5 players come in (including 4* Notre Dame LB Nolan Ziegler and a couple of 3* players from Iowa) but 16 players leave, and it seems kind of bleak for 2024.
