Buffalo lost head coach Maurice Linguist after 3 seasons at the helm, who was part of a growing trend of head coaches leaving to get a salary boost to be an assistant at a P2 program (in this case Alabama). They replaced him with Pete Lembo, a coach with successful head coaching experience in the MAC at Ball State, but who checks notes left to be a higher paid assistant coach at Maryland. To quote noted philosopher Pepper Brooks, “it’s a bold strategy, Cotton, let’s see if it pays off for 'em.” The Bulls return 51% of the productivity from a 3-9 team (FPI = -10.8, middle of the MAC, Sagarin = 54.01, bottom third of the MAC) with a 247 recruiting rating of 140.65, 111th nationally, 11th in the MAC) and a 247 transfer portal rating of 13.79 (116th nationally, bottom half of MAC). It doesn’t look like Khalil Mack or James Starks are walking through that locker room door any time soon. Here’s their 2024 schedule:
8/29 LAFAYETTE (W, coin toss)
9/7 @ Missouri (L)
9/14 UMASS (W)
9/21 @ Northern Illinois (L)
9/28 @ UConn (L, coin toss)
10/5 BYE
10/12 TOLEDO (L)
10/19 WESTERN MICHIGAN (L)
10/26 @ Ohio (L)
11/2 @ Akron (W, coin toss)
11/12 BALL STATE (W, coin toss)
11/20 @ Eastern Michigan (W)
11/26 KENT STATE (W)
Outlook As much as the outlook doesn’t seem bright, if a significant chunk of the coin toss games go their way, Buffalo qualifies for a bowl, which would have to be viewed as a big step forward.
