It's wild that Investopedia, of all sites, just did a company profile on #Mastodon gGmbh with an article entitled, "How Mastodon Makes Money".
Now before anyone who didn't read the article gets into a panic with "Mastodon sold out" -- they didn't -- Investopedia are sure to mention that Mastodon is a non-profit and it raises money through donations.
As for why Investopedia wrote this article, like it or not, the question of "How will it monetize" will always be front and center when talking about social media. And to be honest, that's a more than fair question to ask.
But I'll go further. It's not just about how a social media company imagines itself to make money. It's how they will make money when they must.

Money and profit are related, but not the same thing.
