Boise State starts the first full year of the Spencer Danielson era with high expectations. They’re the odds on favorites to win the Mountain West and are clearly on the short list of strong contenders for the G5 autobid (and depending on how the chips fall, could even be in play for a bye as one of the top 4 rated conference champions). With an FPI of +3.7, the only non-P4 team that is higher is Oregon State. Similarly, Sagarin’s 2023 rating (74.87), coupled with their returning productivity (68%), 247 recruiting rating (181.19, tops in the MWC) and 247 portal rating (22.52, 5th in the MWC) all suggest a great season for the Broncos. They’ll have to replace leading QB Taylen Green (transferred to Arkansas) and WR Eric McAlister (transferred to TCU), which could prove a tall task for a week 2 trip to Eugene, but they should have the horses (including Malachi Nelson from USC) to win the MWC. Here’s the schedule:
8/31 @ Georgia Southern (W)
9/7 @ Oregon (L)
9/14 BYE
9/21 PORTLAND STATE (W)
9/28 WASHINGTON STATE (W)
10/5 UTAH STATE (W)
10/12 @ Hawaii (W)
10/19 BYE
10/25 @ UNLV (W)
11/2 SAN DIEGO STATE (W)
11/9 NEVADA (W)
11/16 @ San Jose State (W)
11/23 @ Wyoming (W)
11/30 OREGON STATE (W, coin toss)
Outlook The Broncos are absolutely poised to run through the Mountain West, and if they manage to beat the Ducks in Eugene and run the table, they’ll have a better case than anybody (including an undefeated Memphis with a win over Florida State) for a playoff bid. It sure looks like they’re on a collision course with the Falcons for the MWC championship game.
