I have two examples that might help explain what I mean.
In 2011 the Rex Ryan Jets were a respectable 8-6 following two afc championship runs. They still had a decent shot at the playoffs going into a Christmas day game against the Giants. Then the Victor Cruz 99 yard touchdown happened, Sanchez played horrible, and the Jets got handled in an ugly game. Their playoff chances plummeted and that core was never good again.
In 2014 the Harbaugh 49ers were a shaky 7-4 but still felt like they had the pedigree to make the playoffs. Until they hosted the Seahawks on Thanksgiving. It was painful. The 49ers couldn’t move the ball at all and it became apparent Kaepernick, Harbaugh, and the rivalry with Seattle were falling apart. Their only win the rest of the year was against the Ryan Lindley Cardinals and the wheels officially came off in the most brutal off-season I’ve ever witnessed.
What about you guys? Can you remember the specific moment an era came to an unofficial end?
