For us the worst example of this was Akili Smith’s rookie contract (which was horrible and had cap implications for us later on as we obviously didn’t get any ROI on it).

The backstory behind this at the time was Smith had the same agent as David Klingler from 7 years earlier (Leigh Steinberg) and because those contract negotiations were also ugly and led to a TC holdout there was pre-existing bad blood going into Smith’s negotiations and none of it was done in good faith. Eventually because Akili ended up missing 27 days of TC and the Bengals were desperate to get him into camp with his agent playing hardball out of spite they caved to his demands and made him the highest paid rookie in that class (despite being drafted 3rd overall).
