Historically, the 2000 Baltimore Ravens can be seen as easily the greatest defense of all-time, giving up just 10.3 PPG in a 16 game season, as well as giving up just 23 points total in their 4 playoff games. But their biggest blip all season came in Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars in their first matchup.
Baltimore all season gave up 2,997 net passing yards and allowed just 11 TD passes and intercepted 23 passes themselves allowed Jimmy Smith, arguably the most underrated WR of all-time was able to do this:
15 Catches
291 Yards (7th most in a game all-time)
3 TD
Totaling 9.7% of all net passing yards Baltimore gave up all season and 27.3% of all TD passes given up during the year. Not to mention that all 3 of his TD’s came from 40+ yards out(40, 43, and 45 yard TD’s respectively).
Given how underrated Jimmy Smith is in his entirety, it’s no wonder that he’s often times overshadowed, but a performance this good against this great of a team given how much other teams struggled against them seems like blasphemy that it isn’t talked about more.
